Vacationing at the Caribbean of the Midwest: Lake McConaughy, Nebraska

Lake McConaughy sits in western Nebraska on the North Platte River, and an easy 3.5-hour drive from the Boulder and Denver area puts you right on its shores. That is the part people never believe until they do it: you leave Colorado in the morning, and by lunchtime you are standing on what I honestly believe is the finest white sand of any beach in the US and Mexico. The locals just call it Lake Mac. I have been calling it my happy place since 1985.

This is a personal one, because for me Lake Mac has never been just a vacation spot. It is where my friends and I have made special memories for four decades, camping on the sand, playing in the water from sunup to sundown, and laughing until our sides hurt. And along the way I have learned its secrets, including a wonderful beach house that is for sale right now on the popular north side of the lake.

The Caribbean of the Midwest

People who have never been to Nebraska do not expect this. Lake McConaughy is big, 26 miles long and nearly four miles wide, and its water is so clear and so blue that on a sunny afternoon it genuinely looks like the Caribbean. That is how it earned its affectionate nickname, and I can tell you from a lifetime of beach trips that the nickname is no exaggeration.

In my opinion, the lake has the finest white sand beaches of any beach in the US and Mexico. I have stood on beaches from coast to coast and down south of the border, and I will stand behind that claim. The sand here is wide, soft, and clean under bare feet, and the water is warm and inviting by summer. It is the kind of place where kids build sandcastles all afternoon and grownups rediscover why they loved the water in the first place.

Summers at Lake Mac Since 1985

Since 1985, Lake Mac has been our summer headquarters. We camp right near the water, and the days take on that easy rhythm that only lake life has. Wake up, coffee in hand, watch the sun come up over the water. Spend the morning out on the lake. Come back sandy and happy, make lunch, go back out for round two.

The water sports are the whole point. We jet ski, we water ski, we sail, and in recent years we have all fallen for paddleboarding. Some of my favorite pictures in the world are from those days, friends on the boards at sunset with the lake as flat and golden as glass. There is something about doing it all with people you love that turns a good lake into a great one, and Lake Mac has given us that for more than 40 years.

A Beach Fire You Can Actually Build

If you live in Colorado, you know the drill: dry mountain summers, fire restrictions, and no campfires pretty much anywhere, no matter how careful you are. That is one of the things I love most about Lake Mac. Out here, you can build a wood-burning fire right on the beach. Real flames, real firewood, the whole nostalgic deal.

There is nothing like an evening fire on the Lake Mac sand. Fire crackling, marshmallows roasting, the water going dark and quiet, and a sky full of Nebraska stars overhead. Kids chase the glow of the embers, someone breaks out a guitar, and nobody wants to call it a night. For a Colorado kid raised on no-burn warnings, that fire on the beach never gets old.

A Beach House on the Popular North Side

Now for the part that gets my real estate heart going. I know of a great beach house for sale on the popular north side of Lake McConaughy, and it is exactly the kind of property I dream about. If you have never been, go. Pack the boat, the boards, and the sunscreen, and give yourself more than a weekend if you can, because one day at Lake Mac turns into a week faster than you expect. My honest advice from forty years of summers there: get on the water early when it is glass, save the afternoons for the beach, and always bring more firewood than you think you need.
